About

Hunter Elementary School is located in the heart of Fairbanks. We are the most ethnically diverse school in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and serve many students on the south side of town from Cushman Street to University Avenue. Hunter is a Title I School with students ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. We are also home a district-wide special education preschool program. After several years of renovation we are now housed in a completely remodeled facility that was rededicated in 2004. This year we have a total of approximately 400 students.

At Hunter Elementary children receive at least ninety minutes of instruction in both reading and math daily. All of our classrooms have Smart Boards. Each day Hunter students have the option of participating in indoor or outdoor recess zones as an alternative to traditional outdoor recess. On Monday through Thursday our after-school program serves students who need a boost academically. We also provide “Parent University Workshops” which are designed to support adults through the many challenges of parenting.

Hunter teachers are caring and dedicated men and women who strive to deliver a quality education to each of their students. All Hunter teachers and paraprofessionals are “Federally Highly Qualified.” Our students are friendly and hardworking. For a number of years they have made a conscientious effort to make a significant, positive difference in their school and community. Our school’s walls are filled with photos of children who have successfully worked toward this endeavor.

Hunter Elementary, in cooperation with the Calypso Farm and Ecology Center, has created a Community Garden in our schoolyard. During the summer months the Hunter Farm Stand sells fresh vegetables & flowers to neighborhood families. We end the season with a wonderful Harvest Festival where a delicious meal is prepared from the garden's bounty.

Hunter’s diversity is our strength. Our school motto reflects our day-to-day work and play. We remain:

“Hand in Hand, Heart to Heart, Learning Together”
